I guess I am just frustrated that iTunes can't just check for the existing file. My playlists are huge and involve many different albums, so re-creating them on my iPhone would take forever, and. I just then end up with problems in my playlists the songs disappear even though there is still a copy of the exact same song already in the library. I just can't believe that something this dumb and pointless has been happening for that long.Īt any rate, my problem is with duplicates on my iPhone. I hope Apple is paying you something for trying to remedy their flawed design. I really appreciate all of the time you've put into this. W H Y ? It just seems like a really poor design. Under what circumstances would another duplicate file on my phone be anything but a total pain? This seems like it would be easy to fix in iTunes, but apparently this has actually been happening for many years now. That would be incredibly and pointlessly laborious.Īs I said: I can't fathom why iTunes can't just check first to see if the file is already on my iPhone. I realize that I could make the playlists on my phone, but I have maybe 50 playlists that all have a hundred songs in them. If I delete the extra, sometimes it will then disappear from the playlist. well, since there are now pointless duplicates, it plays some songs twice. So the result is that if I want to just play an album. I already have my entire library on my phone, but it copies a new duplicate file over anyway, and then I have two. My biggest issue is when I make playlists and then copy them onto my iPhone. See this thread for some more thoughts on the topic.ĭuplicates in my main library aren't such a problem. If you have multiple entries in iTunes connected to the same file on the hard drive then don't send to the recycle bin. Sorting the list by Date Added may make it easier to select the appropriate tracks, however this works best when performed immediately after the dupes have been created. You need to manually select all but one of each group to remove. Use View > Show Duplicate Items (pre iTunes 12.4) or File > Library > Show Duplicate Items (post 12.4) and then click Same Album to display exact duplicates as this is normally a more useful selection. It is a manual process and the article fails to explain some of the potential pitfalls such as lost ratings and playlist membership, or that sometimes the same file can be represented by multiple entries in the library and that deleting one and recycling the file will break any others. Signing out of the store and back in again will usually resolve that issue.Īpple's official advice on duplicates is here: Find and remove duplicate items in your iTunes library. iTunes may occasionally show past purchases in the cloud even when there is a downloaded copy in the library. ITunes may create duplicates if the same content is repeatedly added from outside the media folder when it is set to make copies of anything that is added to the library, or is added from an external drive that hosts the media folder that was offline when iTunes was launched.
